CHICAGO – Guests to the Willis Tower’s SkyDeck obtained an additional scare Monday when the attraction’s protective layer masking the glass splintered into hundreds of pieces.
The Willis Tower advised CNN affiliate WBBM no one was in any danger, as the protective layer did what it was purported to do.
Chicago-space resident Jesus Pintado captured the harrowing second on video.
“There was a lady with two youngsters they usually seemed actually pale and scared because the floor just cracked,” Pintado advised WBBM.
The glass sightseeing box extends from the 103rd flooring of Willis Tower in Chicago and attracts about 1.5 million visitors each year.
The ledge is designed to carry up to 5 tons and its protective coating is intended to maintain the ledge from scratching.
The protective layer cracked before in May 2014, creating an analogous panic.
In 2014, tourist Alejandro Garibay advised CNN affiliate WGN he saw strains forming within the glass and immediately moved from the ledge.
There was no instant danger in that case either.
