Colorado Avalanche rookie Cale Makar will make NHL debut replacing injured Sam Girard vs. Calgary Flames

Second-yr defenseman Sam Girard is day-to-day with an upper-body damage, Avalanche coach Jared Bednar stated, and he can be changed by Cale Makar on Monday night time in Recreation three of the membership’s seven-recreation playoff collection towards the Calgary Flames. Makar will probably be making his NHL debut at the Pepsi Middle.

Girard and Maker are both 20, with Girard roughly five months older. Girard sustained what’s believed to be a shoulder damage in Recreation 2 on Saturday — the same night time Makar played within the NCAA championship recreation for the University of Massachusetts.

“I don’t assume it is going to be hopefully too huge of a transition,” Makar stated. “(UMass) is coming off of a championship recreation and NCAA hockey is fairly fast-paced itself. I don’t assume the velocity or something might be an excessive amount of of a challenge for me.”

He added: “Just go on the market and do what they want me to do. I’ll provide offense if I’ve to and hopefully be steady on the defensive finish as nicely.”

Makar signed his three-yr, entry-degree contract Sunday and participated in Monday’s morning skate the Pepsi Middle. A proper shot, Makar shall be paired with lefty Patrik Nemeth at even power and substitute Girard because the quarterback on the No. 2 energy-play unit.

Girard, who shoots left, had been paired with righty Erik Johnson, who will now play with Ian Cole at even power.

Philipp Grubauer will continue to start out in internet for the Avalanche, which gained 3-2 in extra time Saturday in Recreation 2. The Flames opened the collection with a 4-0 victory on Thursday.
